Dave Madigan and Meadhbh O’Connor: Power Structure

Dave Madigan and Meadhbh O’Connor: Power Structure

26th Jan 2012 - 04th Feb 2012

Opening reception Thursday 26th Jan 2012 6-8pm

Open Tues - Sat 12-6pm

‘Power Structure’ brings together the first collaborative project between Dublin-based artists Dave Madigan and Meadhbh O’Connor. Exploring two forms of power – energy and money – ‘Power Structure’ is the result of discussion between the artists on the fundamental and controversial role these two forms of power play in society, with all the environmental and social consequences they carry. The show features site-specific sculptural installations, including an installation comprised of 4 tonnes of ash from a peat-burning power station and large, steel transmission gears; an installation of salt crystals and copper coins, and other works. Also featuring is a commissioned word-piece by Helen Horgan responding to the word ‘power.’

‘Power Structure’ arose from a longstanding dialogue between artists Dave Madigan and Meadhbh O’Connor. Both artists work largely through installation, which is driven by a shared interest in the implications of the techno-scientific age. Dave’s work is characterised by large-scale and technically complex installation. He reworks the detritus of the technological age, requiring much manual labour, construction and digital modelling for his projects. Meadhbh’s practice is also characterised by meticulous and complex installation, stemming from her acute interest in science. Her work is identifiable by its environmentalist stance, and in its employment of unusual materials. Both artists work from Moxie Studios, Dublin and graduated with first class honours degrees from the Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Dun Laoghaire in 2009.
