Fergus Byrne: Siblings

Fergus Byrne will present work resulting from a project with dancers Megan and Jessica Kennedy, during which they engaged in wrestling training in order to emulate the statuary of Hellenistic Greece. During the project, the study of contact improvisation,* in conjunction with wrestling, treaded the line where intention alters the implication of movements that are employed in both disciplines.
The film Siblings shows the results of this. Alongside Megan and Jessica, the wrestlers Dan and Keith Kennedy also feature. Siblings complements the previously shown film The Wrestlers; Notes on a Sculpture which focussed on the statue, The Wrestlers in the National Gallery of Ireland. There will be a screening of The Wrestlers; Notes on a Sculpture during the run of the show as well as a dance performance by Fergus Byrne and Cindy Cummings. In addition to this, the work will also comprise of drawing and sculpture. Sculpture presents a simplification of the planar interactions of bodies in motion while drawing provides reflections on the evolving process while working with the dancers. *Contact improvisation is an improvisational dance form that explores the natural movements of bodies in response to one another by sharing weight, balance and momentum. States of inertia lead toward a mutual dependency whereby there is no leader / follower relationship but a constant flux of these roles that perpetuates the dance. It began in 1970 with pioneers Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith and others. It drew much from the movement principle of the marital art aikido.
