Something else to Do But Hang Around in Suburbia is a series of images based on the lives of the people who live in Ireland’s suburban areas. It challenges the stereotypes and presumed homogeneity associated with suburban life, exploring notions of dysfunction, discord, and the bizarre, looking at the way our lives are performed, and our acceptance or rejection of the various roles society tends to place upon us. Each photograph presents its subject as a character or an actor in their own lives, bringing the private into the public – ‘airing one’s dirty laundry’ so to speak.

Kirsty O’Keeffe is an Irish artist and graduate of DIT. She was selected by The Joinery as part of their 2010 recent graduate programme.
