Eternal Spirit Canyon is a solo exhibition by Richard Proffitt. Proffitt’s work is inspired by places, landscapes, objects and cultures that encourage histories and fictions to become attached to them.

Eternal Spirit Canyon is informed by cultures that are shaped by the accumulation of influence from a range of sources. Particular subjects that are of interest to Proffitt include 1960s counter-culture, post-apocalyptic fiction, African -American hoodoo, Cuban Santeria, Haitian Vodou, spaghetti westerns and cassette tape culture. Through a combination of found and fabricated objects, traditional folk-art techniques and symbolic processes, Proffitt imbues materials with shamanic qualities aiming to make connections and find resonance between these somewhat disparate subjects.

Eternal Spirit Canyon renders The Joinery reminiscent of a ritualistic hangout evocative of hybrid cultures and outsider belief systems. These cultures and belief systems are borne out of the rejection of a commercialised modernity and evoke a longing for a time when culture, music, and faith seem more tangible and authentic.

Richard Proffitt’s work was selected by Ruth Clinton and Niamh Moriarty for the Joinery Spring Programme.

Richard Proffitt was born in Liverpool, 1985 and is based in Dublin. He studied MA Fine Art at Manchester School of Art (2007/8) and BA Visual Arts at University of Salford (2004/07). Recent exhibitions include Temporary Residence at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, UK, Rendez Vous 12, Iziko National Gallery, South Africa, The Golden Banner, DAFO Projectes, Lleida, Spain and Lost Is Found, Cornerhouse, Manchester, UK.

Eternal Spirit Canyon will be accompanied by a film screening and a gallery performance by Cian Nugent & David Lacey, 8-10 pm on the 28th.
