Waiting For Something / Waiting For Nothing : John Jones

02nd Mar 2011 - 07th Mar 2011

Opens 2nd March 6-8pm
Runs daily 11-6

‘Waiting For Something/ Waiting For Nothing’ brings together a number of drawings from an ongoing series (2008-Present). The works chosen for the exhibition are both directly and indirectly influenced by the recent upsets of the global downturn and the bank bailouts, while also dealing with issues ranging from religion, war, animal cruelty and globalization. Seclusion and dissent are among the key re-occurring themes that run throughout the series. The works emerge primarily from research into historical and contemporary imagery and are adapted for the artist’s own purpose. They are a blend of truth and fiction – a continuous open dialogue where each work helps to inform the other- constantly pulling the narrative in different directions. Element’s are extracted and statues shrouded or vandalized. Lone protesters hold banners aloft proclaiming injustices – some masked or in costume – concealing their identities and giving them a somewhat sinister or bizarre appearance.

John Jones lives and works in Dublin. He received an Hons BA from NCAD in 2007 and since then has exhibited in various group shows including most recently; ‘The Swimming Naked Prophecy’ at Mermaid Arts Centre; ‘129th RUA Annual Exhibition’, Belfast; ‘Art In Context’ with Signal Arts Centre, Bray; ‘Drawing? Yes, Drawing!’ Pilsen, Czech Rep; ‘Summer Show 2010’ at Rua Red Gallery; ‘180th RHA Annual Exhibition’; ‘Preponderance of the Small’ with Douglas Hyde Gallery 3; ‘How Do You Know?’ at Blankspace Gallery, California; ‘Park Life’/ an outdoor exhibition at St. Anne’s Park and a solo exhibition of drawings ‘And With Each Breath Taken’ at Áras Inis Gluaire, Mayo. ‘Waiting For Something / Waiting For Nothing’ is the first solo exhibition by John Jones in Dublin.
