Yvonne Woods & Susan Montgomery

Yvonne Woods & Susan Montgomery

08th Jun 2011 - 14th Jun 2011

Opening reception Wednesday 8 June, 6-8pm.
Open daily 12-6pm.

Susan Montgomery and Yvonne Woods have created work inspired by the prose of the Canadian writer Anne Michaels. Their inspiration is drawn directly from Michaels’ 1996 novel ‘Fugitive Pieces,’ a profound meditation on loss and love, the dead and the living, and the indestructibility of the human spirit.

Taking Michaels’ themes of archaeology, memory, loss and the body as central concerns, the artists articulate these ideas through their individual work processes.

“The shadow past is shaped by everything that never happened. Invisible it melts the present like rain through karst. A biography of longing. It steers us like magnetism, a spirit torque. This is how one becomes undone by a smell, a word, a place…..like love that closes its mouth before calling a name.”[1]

Montgomery is interested in the manipulation of found paper centred on the behaviour of chance marks and stains. The results are images that describe a dialogue between the carefully chosen tools, media and surfaces she uses that express the above concerns.

Woods has used silver gelatin glass plate prints on hand-made fibre based photosensitive paper. Using an outmoded printing technique and one hundred year old photographic plates taken by a friend’s uncle ‘Leo Hayes.’ She revisits an unknown past, expressing the loss of history through deterioration of object and memory.

Montgomery is based in West Cork and Woods is based in Dublin. They come from backgrounds of print and painting, and are graduates of NCAD and DLIADT respectively. Their work is held in both private and public collections including The Office of Public Works, Trinity College, The Ice Hotel, Ballina.
